Purpose

The purpose of this project is to provide electric-powered high-speed rail service that delivers predictable and consistent travel times between major urban centers and increases connectivity to airports, mass transit systems, and the highway network (CHSRA).

Need Overview
  1. Provide an efficient and reliable alternative mode of transportation to support California's growing economy.

  2. Construct a safe and reliable high-speed train route through the San Gabriel Mountains.

  3. Connect the economic hubs of Palmdale and Burbank.

Need: Regional Connectivity

Provide an efficient and reliable alternative mode of transportation to support California's growing economy.

California high-speed rail project will connect the major regions of the state from San Francisco to Los Angeles with service to Sacramento, San Diego, and Anaheim.  The project will contribute to economic development and a cleaner environment, create jobs, and preserve agricultural and protected lands.  Over 260 certified small businesses have already been employed to work on planning, design, and construction activities throughout the state.  High-Speed Rail will ultimately create 3,500 permanent jobs in addition to tens of thousands of temporary jobs designing and building the system.  Once operational, the system will operate on 100% renewable energy, providing a clean alternative to the current transportation options that degrade air quality across the state (CHSR Palmdale to Burbank SAA 2015).

Need: Alternative Route through San Gabriel Mountains

Construct a safe and reliable high-speed train route through the San Gabriel Mountains.

There are currently only two major travelways connecting Palmdale and Burbank: SR-14 (shown in blue) and Metrolink Antelope Valley line (shown in red).  The Palmdale to Burbank Segment will connect the Antelope Valley to the San Fernando Valley in Southern California via another mode of transportation: high-speed rail.

Need: Connect the Economic Hubs of Palmdale and Burbank

Connect the economic hubs of Palmdale and Burbank.

The Palmdale Transportation Center offers connections between the Antelope Valley Transit Authority local and commuter bus service, Metrolink commuter rail service, Santa Clarita Transit, Greyhound bus service, and Amtrak Throughway bus service.  The transportation center includes concessions, public telephones, comfortable seating, restrooms, and security service (City of Palmdale).  The Palmdale high-speed rail station is located directly east of the Palmdale Transportation Center.

The Burbank Regional Intermodal Transportation Center is the first direct rail-to-terminal connection at any Southern California airport as it sits adjacent to Bob Hope Airport.  The transportation center and consolidated rental car facility connects rail, bus, and rental car customers with a commercial airport.  Both Metrolink and Amtrak trains, as well as Metro, Burbank, and various shuttle buses, provide connectivity to and from the transportation center.  Major carriers such as Alaska, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, United, and US Airways service the nearby airport as well as 11 differental rental car companies (Metrolink News Release, April | May 2016).  The Burbank high-speed rail station is located directly north of the Burbank Regional Intermodal Transportation Center and to the east of Bob Hope Airport.

High-speed rail commuters will be offered many connecting transit options both to and from the high-speed rail facilities including airport transportation services, Metrolink and Amtrak train and bus services, local and regional bus services, local bicycle paths, and traditional automobile arterials.
