Travel Time Estimate

The following acceleration parameters from California High-Speed Train Program EIR/EIS Table 3.0-1 were used in this calculation. High Speed Rail Authority is currently in the process of searching for a train set manufacturer. Therefore, for preliminary design purpose, the chosen train set is a recommended train set from Technical Memorandum 6.3, Trainset Configuration Analysis and Recommendation. It is the Shinkansen N700. With the acceleration and deceleration values shown below, total travel time and average speed were calculated.  Maximum design speed and total distance is based off the geometric design of each alignment.  Both the horizontal and vertical alignment geometry affect the design speed of the high-speed train.  Therefore there are restrictions of speed in some areas.  Horizontal circular curves, grades, and vertical curves were all analyzed when calculating the travel time.  Results are shown in Travel Time Comparison Table below. Individual alignment data and graphs can be found at their respective links below.

Shinkansen N700 series Train Set

Acceleration:  0.944 mph/s

Deceleration:  -1.2 mph/s

Assumption:  Constant acceleration and deceleration for simple and comparative time estimate purposes.
